The Aikido Academy

Aikido was devised as a way to deal with attacks without counter-attacking. Physically it teaches harmonious technique. Mentally it is about centering and extending power. Spiritually it is an art of letting go.

Aikido ultimately goes beyond these three dimensions, though. It makes it possible to explore realms of experience that cannot be described.

The Aikido Academy is part of Aikido Kenkukai International (AKI). Its members conduct aikido research (kenkukai) in close collaboration with Yoshinobu Takeda, 8th dan, and his senior students. The spirit of AKI is mirrored in the kakejiku (scroll) given to the Aikido Academy by Takeda-shihan. Rather than the three characters that comprise aikido, this scroll has only two kanji (chinese characters): ai, which means harmony, and ki, which means spirit. The third character, do, is deliberately omitted, since AKI students are encouraged to find their own way by researching aikido communally for themselves.

Instructor

The Aikido Academy was established by Ralph Pettman in 2006. He has practised aikido for nearly 40 years. In 2007 he was awarded a 6th Dan from the Honbu in Japan. Currently based in Melbourne, Australia, he also trains as regularly as he can with the AKI club that he founded in Wellington, in New Zealand, in 1994.
